Imagine that you’ve finished your book. Everything is in order. Now, you’ll need to connect with your readers.

But the question is, how do you find them?

How can authors find the audience that will read, make interpretations, discuss, and remember their books? Where can they find the people who’ll become their lifelong readers and even friends?

Well, the good news is that today’s internet-driven marketing tools have many ways to help authors match their work with their audience. Here are just some examples:

Social Media

Whether it is for advertising your book or simply for communicating and connecting regularly with your audience, social media becomes the tool to get the numbers that pinpoint compatible readers. Importantly, it lets you know you are on the right track.

These include metrics from advertising on various platforms. One of the advantages of social media marketing is that you can still use it to test with broader audiences. Moreover, these tools can extend to other areas of your growing book-based business (such as websites).

Influencer Marketing

If you took a good, honest look at some of the most influential non-fiction authors in the last ten years (from Seth Godin to Joyce Meyer), you have to admit that they are more than just their published books. They are also influencers and thought leaders in their field.

Besides having their published novels as their main focus, they also have side quests. There’s definitely nothing wrong with choosing to become influencers. In fact, becoming an influencer in the field is another way of continuously engaging with audiences. The message, or the insights in the novel, is still shared with the followers.

Networking and Events

Lastly, your book can be used in multiple ways. It can be used to expand your online presence and as material to present when pitching your skills and profession in networking or speaking forums.

As a budding author, it’s advantageous to be seen in different areas of opportunity to promote your book and yourself. Having speaking engagements in forums and events is the perfect way to be known as a reliable key personality in your field.

Importantly, when you know your audience, you know what to present and share with the crowd. You are in the best space, the right zone where you can share things you know will help people.

Email Marketing

You may have heard that many independent authors get their best marketing done via email. Or more specifically, it’s by building an email newsletter list.

But whether you are using a list to supplement your broader marketing strategy or find that it also works best for your book, it is definitely the strictest when it comes to knowing your audience. Unclear targeting in email campaigns could have disastrous consequences (such as losing subscribers and declining credibility).

So what can be done? To ensure that your emailing power is used professionally (and correctly), you have to send off relevant newsletters or invitations. For example, if you’re inviting your subscribers to an event, you have to explain the purpose, the details, and the benefits of going to the gathering. If you have a new book to be published, you can send reminders to readers that you have an upcoming event. Only send these newsletters to subscribers.

Encourage your subscribers or followers to respond to your emails or leave comments to ensure interactions.

Connecting With Your Audience

When looking at the list, the main question would be: why would you want to connect with your followers or readers?

The answer is simple: you need to build lasting relationships and bridges with your readers and audience—they are an essential part of your journey as a writer. Without your readers, your books don’t have homes.

So, take the time to understand how you can connect with your readers. These points are only a few of the things you can do. Find your rhythm and build your network.
