Independent book marketing and supported self-publishing house ReadersMagnet is fortunate enough to have participated in the recently concluded Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF). The event attracted 2.38 million visitors, surpassing last year’s figures of 2.31 million. The 11-day fair opened on November 1 through 11 at the Sharjah Expo Center in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
ReadersMagnet put up an exhibit booth to display different books of various genres. One notable book was One Life: An Afghan Remembers by Abdul Qayum Safi, an education advocate who grew up in Afghanistan and received higher education in America and the Middle East. In a city that stakes its claim as the Islamic cultural capital, religious-themed books made its way to the SIBF 2017, such as In The Beginning: John Chapter One by Edward Figueroa and The Turning Point: Islam and Jesus’ Salvation by Fawzy T. Abdelmalek.
Held under the continued patronage of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah and himself an author, the SIBF is the third largest international book fair and one of the Arab world’s foremost cultural and literary events. This year’s edition, the 36th since its founding in 1982, saw not only a record number of visitors but also sales. The SIBF 2017 posted an increase of 17% in book sales, partly due to the high volume of sales of children’s books and the retail performances of new exhibitors.
The SIBF 2017 gave ReadersMagnet a lot of insight into the Arab world’s premier book fair. The company was well aware that the fair’s biggest customers were definitely young children, both locals and expats. The fair featured a number of exhibits and workshops designated for children, including a comic book exhibition and a storytelling puppet workshop. The inclusion of children-friendly activities at the SIBF helped raked in record-breaking sales, thus giving ReadersMagnet an idea of what sells at such an event.
ReadersMagnet looks forwards to participate in next year’s edition of the SIBF with more selections.
