This week, ReadersMagnet took part in one of the grandest events in the literary world – the 36th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) which opened last October 31 and culminated last November 10 at the United Arab Emirates’ Sharjah Expo Center.
The event opened with a hearty breakfast ceremony that filled the immensely spacious ballroom of Sharjah Expo Center on Al Taawun Street. His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and the Sharjah Book Authority chairman Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri presented the annual literary awards with 2,000 invited guests who were amazed by the stunning video presentation that saw laser beams and bright images of emirate’s landmarks. World Book Capital, National Geographic, the Sharjah Publishing City free trade zone development as well as Guest of Honor Japan were among those who graced the marbled-floor concourse and certainly did not disappoint the guests and participants of the fair. Aside from the launching of Sheik Dr. Sultan’s latest literary work, Bibi And The King’s Sons, the event gathered Algerian novelist Ahlam Mosteghanemi, Jordanian-Palestinian novelist Ebrahim Nasrallah, British writers James E. Montgomery, Bruce Parry, and Emma Gannon. Dr. Leonard Mlodinow, James W. Parkinson, and A.J Finn represented America. Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh also attended the event. Famous personalities like actress and writer Soha Ali Khan, motivational speaker Gaur Gopal Das, social activist and filmmaker Nandita Das, composer and conductor L. Subramaniam, violinist Karan Thapar and actor-director Prakash Raj are among those spotted. Proof of 2018 Sharjah Book Fair’s success is the addition of 15 new countries.
