First held in 1982, the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) is one of the most important literary and cultural events in the Middle East and the Arab world. It is the third-largest book fair in the world.
The 11-day book fair is organized under the patronage of the sovereign ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi. The primary goal of the book fair is to foster an environment of knowledge and innovation built on the foundation of books and reading and bring together authors, publishers, intellectuals and artists worldwide to partake in a vibrant cultural program.
The Sharjah International Book Fair fulfills the vision of Sheikh Dr. Sultan to make Sharjah, the third-largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the nation’s cultural and knowledge capital. As skyscrapers and other megastructures rose from the ground in neighboring city Dubai, Sheikh Dr. Sultan called upon the people of Sharjah to build upon knowledge and culture.
Adding to the feather in the cap of Sharjah is the designation “World Book Capital City” for the year 2019 bestowed by UNESCO as recognition of the city’s continuous efforts in promoting books and literacy.
