The Largest Book Event for Children’s Books

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is the main event in the publishing calendar as far as children’s books are concerned. Every year, an estimated crowd of more than 28,000 flocks to Bologna, Italy to take part in the BCBF.

For authors and children’s book writers, it is a venue to observe and explore the latest publishing and book marketing trends, especially in the children’s book industry. The four-day fair is also a chance to meet the most in-demand illustrators and fairy tale authors.

It’s been an annual tradition for various sectors of the publishing industry dealing with children’s stories to gather during the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Aside from publishers, writers, and artists, the fair is attended by graphic designers, literary agents, licensors and licensees, packagers, booksellers, brands, audio-book professionals, distributors, librarians, teachers, and media.

The BCBF serves as the main venue for trading rights, for publishing, translations, and derived products (movies or animated series).

BolognaRagazzi Awards & Illustrator’s Exhibition

Another highlight of the Bologna Book Fair is the BolognaRagazzi Awards. The BolognaRagazzi Awards honors work in four categories: Fiction, Non-fiction, New Horizons, and Opera Prima. The New Horizons award is given to “extraordinarily innovative works” originating from non-Western countries. While the Opera Prima is for first works. Last year, the organizers added another category, the Toddler. The award is dedicated to books for children below three years old.

Although not officially part of the BolognaRagazzi, two major awards are announced during the event. The biannual Hans Christian Andersen Awards and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Each year more than 1,000 titles from over 40 countries are submitted for the awards.

This year also marks the 54th Illustrators Exhibition. Since 1967, the Illustrators Exhibition is held within the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The works are selected by the jury composed of two publishers and three illustrators or teachers of illustrations. Every year, around 3,000 artists from over 70 countries submit their original artworks for the said exhibition. Each artist is allowed 5 entries.
