Those changes were worse going back home to Pine Bluff than when they moved to Slot Pot. Being unaccepted by her peers, she had become an outcast to everyone, and she could not understand why. Being rejected by everyone made it harder to reclaim her space in her comfort zone– her refuge, her home. Even her teacher, who was supposed be the voice of welcome and encouragement, judged her intelligence by how she looked and not by her character. There was no testing involved before placing her in the bottom third of the class. Debora knew she had to put her best foot forward, to gain some type of respect. She made it her business to remind them that you cannot judge a book by its cover. She put forth all she had within herself and proved to all, that she was more than what meets the eye. |

Love for reading has always been a part of this writer’s life. She gives credit to her mother for introducing her and her sister to nightly readings. Debora was a highly creative child at age five, she began making up poems and stories even before she was able to put them into writing. As she grew, so did her love for reading and writing. By age thirteen, she was writing complete manuscripts. At fifteen, she had followers who would come and “speak” to her in class so that they could be the first to get their hands on the manuscripts. As time progressed, she read at weddings, elementary and middle schools, and churches. A student at the University of Pine Bluff Arkansas, she took thirteen different literatures and to this day remains one of the best descriptive writers that has passed through the University.
